Fifteen years inside
the business of law.
Rifat Sheikh is a London-born practitioner educator and entrepreneur. He has spent his career where law meets commerce: how firms win work, keep clients and earn the trust that brings the next instruction.
Co-founder of a regulated London law firm
Rifat co-founded a regulated, multi-department London law firm and served as its Head of Business Development & Marketing for 15 years. He built legal departments across several locations, each serving different client needs and niches, and designed the referral systems that fed them: accountants, IFAs and estate agents in the private sector; Local Authorities and borough solicitors in the public sector, where 87% of the firm's public sector instructions came through systems he designed; and charities, law centres and Citizens Advice in the third sector. Three sectors, three different rulebooks.

A teacher of professionals long before the lecture theatre
Throughout those years Rifat taught, nurtured and guided senior and junior professionals in how work is won and kept: how partners think, how a referral relationship is earned, and how a junior lawyer becomes someone clients seek out. The Future Lawyer brings that same mentoring into the university, so students learn it before their first interview rather than years into practice.
Co-founder of REACH LAW
Rifat is the co-founder of REACH LAW, AI governance and regulatory intelligence infrastructure for UK regulated law firms. He writes regularly about AI, regulatory compliance, accountability and governance in legal practice. It gives his teaching a rare vantage point: he sees how AI is changing what firms expect from junior lawyers, and why judgement, trust and commercial capability matter more, not less.
Not a solicitor, and that is the point
Solicitors rarely articulate the commercial engine of their own practice, and academics have not lived it. Rifat has spent his career running it. His sessions turn that experience into practical, honest learning: what a fee earner does, how a firm turns work into income, who the client behind the client is, and how to attract appropriate work within SRA rules.
“Understand the firm. Understand the client. Become the lawyer they seek out.”
